Verrucae (Warts)
A verruca is a wart that can appear anywhere on the feet and/or toes. It’s caused by a viral infection in the skin. They’re common in both children and adults, and we assess and treat them regularly.
What is a verruca?
Verrucae are caused by a virus that enters the skin, often through small breaks or cracks. They can appear as a small, rough area on the sole of the foot and are sometimes mistaken for a corn or callus.
Signs of a verruca
- A small, rough or grainy area of skin on the sole of the foot
- They can have tiny black dots within the area, which are small blood vessels
- Tenderness when standing or walking, especially when pinching it from the side
How do verrucae spread?
The virus that causes verrucae can spread through direct contact or shared surfaces, such as around swimming pools or communal changing areas. They don’t affect everyone the same way, some people are more prone to them than others.
Reducing the risk of spreading verrucae
- Wear sandals or flip-flops around communal pools and changing rooms
- Avoid sharing shoes, socks, or towels
- Keep feet clean and dry, and avoid scratching or picking at a verruca
- Cover a verruca with a plaster if you’re likely to be barefoot around others
How we treat verrucae
Treatment options vary depending on the size, location, and duration of the verruca, as well as the age and preference of the patient. We’ll talk you through the options and agree on an appropriate approach together.
