Ingrown Toenails

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of a nail grows into the surrounding skin, which can cause pain, swelling, and often infection. It’s a common condition we see regularly at our practice.

What causes an ingrown toenail?

Ingrown toenails can develop for a number of reasons, including how a nail is trimmed, footwear that crowds the toes, injury, or simply the natural shape of the nail.

Signs to look out for

  • Pain or tenderness along the edge of the nail
  • Redness or swelling around the nail
  • Fluid or discharge, which may indicate infection

Reducing the risk of ingrown toenails

  • Trim nails straight across, rather than curved or too short at the corners
  • Choose footwear with enough room around the toes
  • Keep feet clean and dry
  • Have any early discomfort assessed rather than trimming it yourself

How we treat ingrown toenails

Treatment depends on the severity of the ingrown nail. Ingrown toenails can be managed conservatively and/or surgically with a partial nail avulsion, which can offer a permanent solution. After careful assessment, we’ll explain the options available and agree on the most appropriate treatment for your situation.
